Khmer Art for Sale in Europe 2/2:
This is the 2nd of two posts from one of the regular auction houses in Europe with Khmer artworks included, and can be found at Galerie Zacke, auctioneers based in Vienna, Austria. Their next flagship sale, with 684 lots, though only 34 are Khmer artifacts, will be a 2-day auction of Fine Asian, Buddhism and Hinduism Art on 10 and 11 April. Their estimated prices in Euros are way below those of the major auction houses like Christie’s, Sotheby’s and Bonham’s have been in previous years, though the demand for Khmer art has certainly seen a shift downwards in the past decade, likely due to negative international media headlines. It’s impossible to know if these works of art are authentic antiquities or modern contemporary versions, though the auction house advertise them as originals. I have severe doubts about many of them which I believe are modern versions of original pieces. If they are authentic, then they were almost certainly looted from temples in Cambodia and left the kingdom illegally.
